Happy International Women's Day! Interview with Alice Rosenthal.
Alice Rosenthal - Freelance broadcast journalist and newsreader, occasional writer and voice over artist.
What does International Women’s day mean to you?
I like to think of it as a time of celebration, but in all honesty it tends to mean laughing at Richard Herring's twitter feed as he patiently explains to all the men of the internet that they can relax, there is an International Men's Day and it's in November. Maybe I should change that this year, it should clearly be more about the ladies.
What advice would you give to the young you?
Think about what you actually want to do for the rest of your life, or at least what could you face doing every day for 40 years, and if you don't know what that is then do something that you find interesting. University is not there simply to get you a job. Don't stop doing exercise just because someone told you you're bad at netball. Go to all the gigs, read all the books, travel as much as you can.
What do you think is the funniest/most ridiculous stereotype about women?
That we are looking to trap men, and as soon as we have we will stop them from ever leaving the house again, while making them impregnate us at regular intervals. It's a stereotype that never seems to die, despite the moves towards equality over the last few years. Also, that trans women aren't women * eyeroll *.
What has been the highlight of your carer so far?
Various reporting stints, reading the news on important days and feeling like you're actually doing something worthwhile. On a more personal level, getting guest list to see Manic Street Preachers is up there, and interviewing Vivienne Westwood (this was way before any Assange nonsense). I was so scared I'd make a fool of myself, and I didn't. Mainly because someone else got in there first... "Did you make the dress you're wearing?" "No dear. I designed it. I didn't make it."
If you could put on a parade for international women’s day which women would you put on the float?
Ooooo. Definitely some drag Queens. I'm incredibly socially awkward, and am much more at home dancing with them than in some standard club. I don't mind who, some of the Village regulars would be fine. Britney. I love her, bite me. Sara Pascoe, Aisling Bea and Katherine Ryan, because they look like they have fun together and they're crazy supportive of each other. Margaret Attwood and Dawn O'Porter, different kinds of authors, both ace and entertaining. Courtney Love (see Britney). I mean I should probably have some politicians or great thinkers or something, but thinking of floats makes me think of Pride, so I want the one with the best tunes and the most fun people. If it was a dinner party I'd probably be way more worthy (I probably wouldn't).
